Founded in 1923, the Westport Weston Family YMCA fulfills a role in our community unlike any other organization. For the past 90 years, the Family Y has enriched the entire community by developing and nurturing the potential of its youth, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. The values represented by the Family Y today – Caring, Respect, Responsibility and Honesty – are those espoused by Edward T. Bedford, Westport businessman and philanthropist, when he founded the Family Y in 1923.
A volunteer-governed charitable organization, our Family YMCA is part of a worldwide movement of YMCAs serving over 30 million people in 130 countries. Together the YMCAs in this country make up the largest non-profit community service organization in America. The Family YMCA endeavors to serve all. Membership and participation at the Family Y is open to everyone, regardless of race or ethnic background, religious preference or ability to pay or capacity to play. Much more than a collection of programs and activities – more than a gymnasium and a swimming pool – the Y benefits everybody in our community, whether they use the facility or not, by keeping our children and teens active and involved in socially productive activities. Our Y is an inclusive, welcoming place for those whose specific needs are cared for by the many local organizations the Y partners with in service to our community. Helping to ensure that our neighbors with special needs become active participants in our society is something that benefits us all.
A Center of Community Life
At the Y, strengthening families and the communities we serve is our cause. Ys provide opportunities for youth, families, and older adults to learn, grow and become a part of a healthier, happier community. In 2015, the financial assistance we provided to local individuals and community groups totaled $329,900 and included:
* 925 Family YMCA Members Who Received Financial Assistance or Scholarship Aid
* $213,000 in Direct Financial Assistance and Subsidies
* $116,000 in Community Outreach Programs and Indirect Support of Nonprofit Partners.
The Family YMCA provides space and resources to many community groups and hosts a number of community-wide events that are open to all, including Healthy Kids Day, Out of the Woods and the Indoor Triathlon.
For the past 35 years, the Family YMCA has hosted weekly swim, gym and other activities for individuals with special needs served by Our Vision;
In collaboration with Norwalk Hospital, our Cancer Survivors Program provides cancer patients with 3-month free memberships and customized programs to support recovery;
Since our founding in 1923, we’ve taught more than 35,000 local kids and adults how to swim. To further enhance water safety, in 2015 we partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities on a variety of special aquatics camps and programs.
The Westport Weston Family YMCA is a community service agency dedicated to addressing community needs through quality programs. We provide volunteer opportunities that enrich families, promote health and wellness, develop youth and build self-esteem for all.
