Lifeguard Training & Certification

The Westport Weston Family YMCA is not only our community’s leading provider of swim lessons and water-safety instruction, we also host Lifeguard Certification and Re-certification courses several times a year. The training is conducted by Red Cross certified instructors.

Lifeguard Certification and Re-certification Courses

Our lifeguard certification and re-certification program uses a blended learning curriculum combining online training sessions and a two-day, instructor-led skills session in the YMCA’s Strittmatter Family Aquatics Center. The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguards ages 15 and older with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. To maintain their certification, current lifeguards are required to take periodic refresher courses. Registration is open at westporty.org ; online course work must be completed before the class date.

Masks are required for all in-person classroom learning and may be removed during in-pool skills training. Class size is at reduced capacity.
