Lifeguard Training & Certification

Our Family YMCA is not only our community’s leading provider of swim lessons and water-safety instruction, we also host Lifeguard Certification and Re-certification courses several times a year. The training is conducted by Red Cross instructors.

Lifeguard Certification and Re-certification Courses

The Westport Weston Family YMCA hosts training’s for new lifeguards and to re-certify current lifeguards with a combination of online training sessions and a one-day, instructor-led skills session in the YMCA’s Strittmatter Family Aquatics Center. The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguards ages 15 and older with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. To maintain their certification, current lifeguards are required to take periodic refresher courses. Registration is open at westporty.org ; online course work must be completed before the class date. Live training will take place on the following dates for the upcoming re-certification and certification classes, at the Family YMCA. Certification and Re-Certification classes offered on:   Lifeguard Certification fee for YMCA members is $425; $500 non-member.
