FULL-TIME POSITIONS
DEVELOPMENTAL SWIM COACH
Under the direction of the Head Coach, this position oversees and directs the development of the youth program. This includes maintaining a high level of communication with fellow coaches and swim team parents, running daily practices, planning events (competitive and social), completing swim meet entries, seasonal scheduling, planning program capacities, supervision of assistant coaches at the age group level. The Head Development Coach must be able to answer questions pertaining to all levels of the swim team and areas of the YMCA, assist with the operation of all home meets, as well as assist the Head Coach in areas related to the swim team as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Direct and oversee youth development – competitive and pre-competitive – portion of the Water Rat Swim Team.
- Establish a seasonal training plan for the practice groups and have direct coaching contact with all groups.
- Seasonal plan should be skill and technique focused
- Maintain daily practice attendance and practice logs
- Meet entries for designated practice groups
- Attend swim meets as designated
- Be prepared for all meets with necessary administrative tasks to be done
- Organize and run a well-organized and safe warm-up session for all attending swimmers
- Work with Age Group Parent Reps in organizing social activities for the swimmers.
Strong communication with swimmers, parents and coaches.
- Introduce and lay the foundation of the core values of: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
- Introduce simple goal setting worksheets
- Be proactive in educating the young/new parents to competitive swimming
Additional coaching responsibilities:
- Meet entries for practice groups
- Communicate regularly with other youth coaches
- Communicate regularly with Challenger coaches to see that swimmers are on trajectory for team advancement
- Maintain and stay up to date on current coaching practices and theories and see that practice sessions reflect such knowledge
- Be cognizant of swimmer/youth development as needed for each swimmer in a group environment
- Work with Head Coach as needed. This can include but not limited to:
- Annual practice schedules
- Help to oversee team equipment
- Administrative duties and needed
- Home swim meets
- Professional Development:
- Attend pertinent webinars
- Update and develop ASCA Education Certification
- Attend clinics, meetings, etc. that will further enhance coaching knowledge

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced knowledge in practical, theoretical and psychological concepts of competitive swimming
- An understanding of age and sex characteristics of child and adolescent development

- Be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, ideas to swim team members and parents
- Be able to exercise proper judgment when dealing with swim team members and parents

YOUTH/TEEN FITNESS & CHRONIC DISEASE PROGRAM MANAGER
The Youth & Teen Fitness / Chronic Disease Program Manager is a passionate, caring, individual with personal connection to and investment in healthy living, who will develop, organize, and implement high-quality community program(s) for both Youth/Teen and Senior members. Under the direction of the Chief Operations Officer (COO), This individual is responsible for all aspects of the programming, including staffing, supervision of staff, and YMCA standards, and parent and member communication and safety.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3+ years of youth or senior program experience including supervisory responsibilities.
- Previous experience managing a small to medium sized budget
- High school required; college degree preferred
- Experience implementing evidence-based program models, including targeting specific or underserved populations, managing referral relationships with health care providers, and implementing quality assurance and data collection protocols.
- Strong interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills, especially the ability to respond to parent and teen needs and concerns.
- Must be available Mon through Fri and be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- YMCA approved First Aid, CPR and AED certified (may complete upon hire)

PART-TIME POSITIONS
AQUATICS - LIFEGUARDS
Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Lifeguard (LG) maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the pool deck, and surrounding areas. The LG creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures the safety of every individual at the YMCA, both in and around the pool as well as the rest of the facility. Is always rescue ready, this means in guard suit/shorts with whistle, rescue tube and first aid pack.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Enforce regulations pertaining to showers, food and drink, conduct.
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool and area for hazardous conditions when arriving and when pool is opening or closing.
- Lifeguards are not permitted to take part in any activity that would distract them from watching the pool. This includes doing homework and instructing or talking with members or other staff. No cell phones or other communication devices (e.g., Apple Watch) are allowed on the pool deck.
- Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
- Report 10 minutes prior to scheduled shift in proper uniform (trunks/suit, whistle, and a YMCA provided lifeguard shirt).
- Must actively scan the entire pool, including the bottom, at all times.
- Must secure a substitute lifeguard when unable to fulfill assigned duties and notify supervisor of changes. Sub sheets must be filled out 2 weeks prior to sub needed date. It is the responsibility of the staff to get their shift covered.

GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR - HEALTH & WELLNESS
Under the direction of the Health & Wellness Director, the Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for teaching Group Fitness classes. The Group Fitness Instructor’s key function is to build strong lasting relationships with members, employees and volunteers that will encourage healthy lifestyles. The Group Fitness Instructor must possess high energy and outstanding teaching, communication, organizational and team-building skills.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead Group Fitness classes, as directed by supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
- Select all music for classes.
- Help promote YMCA programs as required.
- Conduct energizing, fun, and safe classes.
- Build effective relationships with participants and parents when working with teens.
- Promote a positive environment.
- Keep accurate class attendance records.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
- Attend or complete all mandatory staff training and meetings as needed.
- Ability to work independently and manage groups of adults or teens.
- Complete incident reports when necessary.
- Maintain class equipment and be accountable for housekeeping in the Exercise Studios.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Degree Required
- Current certification relevant to the specific Group Fitness classes that the instructor will be teaching.
- CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications (within 45 days of hire).

GROUP TRAINING RUNNING COACH
Westport Weston YMCA and NYRR’s Training Team are seeking supportive, experienced leaders to coach NYRR’s Group Training program starting in Westport, CT in May/June 2023. Group Training sessions are held on weekdays 6:30am to 7:30am. Group Training part-time coaches will work with Head Coach Roberto Mandje to execute pre-planned workouts in a group setting with up to 25 runners at a time, creating an engaging and safe workout session for the runners, along with fostering an environment of inclusivity.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the Training Team Lead to execute engaging workouts, that will provide the participants with a workout that builds aerobic capacity and motivates them throughout the session.
- Communicate frequently/as needed with Training team and/or Park Lead via phone, text and email to ensure that advice provided at the workout is science-based and aligns with the NYRR training principles.
- Ensure that participants are engaging in a safe and positive training environment.
- Must commit to total time per workout of 90 minutes. Workout’s average 60 minutes in length, and coaches are expected to arrive 15 minutes ahead of time and are encouraged to stay and answer questions for up to 15 minutes after each workout concludes.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Prior coaching and training/running experience strongly preferred
- Experience coaching and working with runners are various levels
- Preferred: Experience in community building and runner engagement
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
- Ability to implement workout for runners of ranging ability levels and adapt workouts onsite as needed to ensure safety of participants
- Ability to provide deliver clear explanations, demonstrations, and instructions about workout and drills
- Strong interpersonal skills with organized and clear communication style required
- Punctual and dependable
- Ability to encourage and motivate runners.
- Ability to implement effective conflict resolution as needed.
- Ability to adapt to feedback based Lead and customer comments
- Comfort speaking with authority in a group setting
- Preferred: Willingness and flexibility to travel to various locations such as WWFY, Compo Beach and Sherwood Island.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to simultaneously coach and run 4 miles at an assigned pace without stopping
- Run with a 10-pound AED backpack, if required for emergency situations to administer first-aid

GYMNASTIC COACH
Under the direction of the Gymnastic Director, the Gymnastics Instructor has the ability and knowledge to teach a variety of gymnastics classes in a positive, safe, educational, and fun environment The ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, YMCA members, class participants, and the general public is essential.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages and supervises groups of children.
- Instructs class lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines.
- Sets up and maintains class equipment.
- Supervises children before, during, and after class.
- Conveys information about gymnastic department programs, special events and schedules to the public.
- Reports damaged equipment.
- Follows all YMCA Gymnastic Center emergency and safety procedures.
- Completes incident reports as necessary.
- Projects a positive and enthusiastic image on the job at all times, including wearing YMCA staff shirt every day.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Requires working, practical and technical knowledge of gymnastics.
- Ability to lift equipment and to spot children.
- Exercises mature judgment and sound decision making.
- Requires current CPR Certification, USA Gymnastics Concussion Education

- Conduct personal training sessions that are assigned by the Health & Wellness Director, or that the personal trainer secures for him/herself.
- Sell personal training packages.

- Keep an accurate training schedule.
- Redeem all personal training sessions on the date that they occur.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
- Attend or complete all mandatory staff training and meetings as needed.
- Be able to work independently.
- Complete incident reports when necessary.
- Report equipment issues to the Health & Wellness Director.
- Report any operational issues to the Health & Wellness Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School degree required;
- 1-2 years Prior personal training experience preferred;
- Minimum of at least one current Personal Trainer certification (e.g., ACSM, NASM, NSCA, AAPHER);
- CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications;
- Maturity, reliability, organizational skills and preparedness;
- Effective communication and teaching skills.
