Benefits of Personal Training

There are several ways to get started with a Personal Trainer at the Family YMCA:

  • At the Wellness Desk.  Stop by the Wellness Desk and fill out an Interest Form, indicating your contact information, availability, trainer preference, and your general goals that you would like to accomplish through training.
  • Directly with the trainer.  If you know a trainer you would like to work with, you may feel free to schedule with him or her directly.
  • Contact our Health & Wellness Director.  Call Shelly Goldman at 203-571-6035 or email at  Please indicate the following:
    1. General goals
    2. Injury history
    3. Exercise history
    4. Availability (days and times)
    5. Any other information you would like to include as this will allow us to make your training as “personal” as possible.

Arrangements can be made for sit-down appointments to discuss your training needs upon request.

All of the personal trainers at the Family YMCA are certified by nationally-recognized certifying bodies such as NASM, ASCM, NSCA, AFAA or ACE.

When you combine the knowledge and “push” you get from a Personal Trainer with the energy you feel from working with a group, you can expect the best from yourself!  Small-Group Training is the best way for you to get the results you are looking for, on your time. Small-Group Training is designed for a minimum of 4 people for a session to run, so gather up your friends and family and save money at the same time!

Please contact Shelly Goldman at for more information.

Please note: Personal Training, Semi-Private Training, Group Training, and Group Fitness on YMCA property is only permitted by YMCA Certified Personal Trainers/Group Fitness Instructors. This rule also applies to the Y’s Aquatic Center.

Kathy Fagan – BS, Exercise Science, Southern Connecticut State University.

Hi! My name is Kathy and I have been a Certified Personal Trainer for 15 years.  After graduating college, I coached competitive springboard diving at area YMCAs, summer country clubs and high schools.  I moved on to working in corporate fitness centers where I did fitness assessments, exercise prescriptions and instructed group fitness classes.  I realized that I wanted to become a Personal Trainer to work one on one with individuals and help them attain specific fitness and health goals.  I believe that regular exercise greatly improves the quality of life and I enjoy sharing this with people.

I have trained children and adults and particularly enjoy working with older adults.  Most recently, I’ve focused my attention on developing exercise programs that address slowing down the aging process.  I’m very patient and work especially well with those that need extra encouragement and guidance in starting an exercise program!

I would love to meet you and get you started on a challenging but fun routine.  All you need is willingness and consistency! Then, you will reach your goals.

Amy France – BS Psychology, Graduate of National Personal Training Institute, International Sports Sciences Association, Exercise Therapy Specialist I.S.S.A, Conn. Interscholastic Athletic Conference Coaching.

Hi, my name is Amy, I am a Personal Trainer, Running Coach and professional motivator! I work with adults and kids at all levels to get them results.  I train individuals in one-on-one or groups.  I aim to cover all domains of fitness, cardiovascular, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy.  If you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing: make the mind run the body.  Never let the body tell the mind what to do.  The body will always give up but the race is truly won in your head!

The highlight of my day is preparing to train you and myself! I use my training as an opportunity to never stop learning and to always grow as a person, athlete, trainer and coach.  I am thrilled to be helping you achieve your goals! If you visualize it you can do it! Let’s get started!

I have 10 years of coaching and training experience and 35 years of competitive running experience.  One of my proudest moments was competing in The Empire State Building run up (1576 steps, 86 flights, best time 13:48)

I work with clients of various ages and fitness levels to get into the best shape of their life while maintaining a fun and balance lifestyle. I customize design and implement exercise programs based on the clients goals, needs and lifestyle for long term sustainable results. I provide clients with constant motivation and accountability to optimize their health, body composition and performance.

I moved from a successful career in finance to dedicate myself as an ambassador for fitness and wellness. I believe in pushing yourself to be better every day.

Gina Bocchetta – NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) Certified Personal Trainer, AFAA (Athletics & Fitness Association of America) Personal Fitness Trainer, NASM Exhale-Certified Barre Teacher

Hi, I’m Gina, Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor (Y-Method and Core Barre) here at the Y. With clients ranging from youth to seniors, I bring a variety of exercises to each session to ensure a safe, effective, and challenging workout.

My philosophy is: form, fun, and moderation first because fitness doesn’t have to be just “work.” Laughing or smiling through a workout not only creates a fostering environment that enhances physical and emotional well-being, it also enables proper breathing techniques that help to boost results within the core.

Outside of the gym I run Spartan Races throughout the world, play piano and guitar, and am also studying to earn additional NASM certifications including fitness nutrition and corrective exercise specializations, resistance training, and bodybuilding.

Change “tomorrow” to “today.” Let’s kick start your fitness goals!

Shelly Harrington – Ohio State University, Bachelor of Science, Business, NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) Certified Personal Trainer, NASM Youth Exercise Specialist, NASM Women’s Fitness Specialist

Hi, my name is Shelly and I have been a Certified Personal Trainer for 5 years. I have a passion for fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I love running outdoors – I guess I’d say it’s my form of meditation. In 2015, I ran my first marathon and I’ve completed many half-marathons.

As a personal trainer, my number one priority is understanding my client’s abilities, fitness level, current or past injuries, goals, and expectations. I design personalized programs that include flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning, core, balance, reactive, and resistance training, using a variety of techniques to keep the sessions always fun and rewarding.

I’m a mother of four children and I understand the importance of making every minute count. In our sessions, I promise to challenge, motivate, and encourage you – being your biggest supporter, helping you stay on track and achieve the results you deserve.
