Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at the Westport Weston Family YMCA!

Hispanic Heritage Month is upon us! From September 15 to October 15, the Westport Weston Family YMCA is thrilled to join in the nationwide celebration of the vibrant histories, cultures, and contributions of our Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx community members. This month-long celebration is not just a nod to cultural diversity but a celebration of the myriad ways these communities enrich our lives and our society.

A Brief History of Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month officially starts on September 15, a significant date that marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico’s independence is celebrated on September 16, and Chile’s on September 18. This time frame was chosen to honor the roots of many Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States, who trace their heritage to these pivotal moments in history.

Initially established as a week-long observance in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, it was later expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. This extended period allows us to dive deeper into the rich tapestry of Hispanic and Latino cultures and to celebrate their contributions across a broader spectrum.
