WHERE DREAMS OF GOLD ARE BORN- WWFY SWIMMING STAR MATTHEW TORRES HEADS TO PARIS FOR 2024 PARALYMPICS
The Westport Weston Family YMCA is proud to recognize Matthew Torres, a Water Rat Swim Team member since the age of 13, who will be representing Team USA for the second time in the 2024 Paralympic Summer Games. The 23-year-old Ansonia resident previously clinched a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and will be competing as a U.S. Paralympian once again in Paris this August.
Torres, who was born with amniotic band syndrome and has faced various physical challenges throughout his life, has been a beacon of determination and excellence in the swimming world. His journey from a young pool enthusiast to an elite Paralympic athlete has been marked by significant achievements, including setting a world record in the 1500-meter freestyle and earning multiple medals in national and international competitions.
“I’m incredibly excited to compete in Paris,” Torres said. “The 400 meter is my primary and strongest event, and I have the stamina for it. I definitely want to medal in the 400 in Paris.”
Torres’ passion for swimming was ignited in 2008 after watching Michael Phelps’ historic performance at the Beijing Olympics. Inspired by Phelps, Torres began taking swimming lessons at the YMCA and joined a local swim team, setting him on a path to greatness. His hard work and dedication have since led him to compete at the highest levels, including a memorable meet and greet with Phelps in 2019.
His coach at the Westport Weston Family YMCA, Ellen Johnston, reflects on Torres’ remarkable journey with pride. “Watching Matthew excel in the sport has been incredibly rewarding,” Johnston said. “His work ethic and commitment have been evident since he joined our team. Matthew embodies the spirit and purpose of the Paralympics.”
Despite facing setbacks, such as a serious health issue last year, Torres has shown resilience and determination. His recovery and return to competitive swimming are a testament to his unwavering spirit and dedication.
Torres’ parents, Gil and Martha Torres, are incredibly proud of their son’s accomplishments. “Matthew’s achievements are truly amazing, and we are constantly in awe of his perseverance and talent,” said Gil Torres. “He has always believed that the only limits are those he sets for himself.” Matt’s parents and grandmother will be in the stands cheering him on.
In addition to his Paralympic pursuits, Torres will be representing Team USA in the Open Water Cup in Sardinia, Italy, on September 21. Following this, he plans to take a brief respite before considering his next steps.
Torres and his US Paralympic teammates will be traveling to Stuttgart, Germany on August 16 for a final training camp before heading to the Olympic Village in Paris. The 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, which open on August 28, will be showcased around the world. We wish Matthew the best as he competes in this very special competition!
