A CONVERSATION WITH JEN MALICHIO, WWFY’S NEW DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

The Westport Weston Family YMCA plays an important role in bringing people together and supporting the health and well-being of our community. Philanthropic leadership helps ensure the Y can continue offering programs and services that are accessible to all.
We’re excited to welcome Jen Malichio, our new Development Director. In the Q&A below, Jen shares what drew her to the Y’s mission, her path into nonprofit leadership, and how philanthropy supports the Y’s impact across Westport and Weston.
Welcome to the Westport Weston Family YMCA! What drew you to this role and to the Y’s mission?
Thank you! I’m excited to be here. The Westport Weston Family YMCA has been a cornerstone of this community for over a hundred years. With a gorgeous 76,000-square-foot facility and 32-acre campus, 12,500 members, and best-in-class programs and instructors, there is truly no other Y quite like it. More than anything, it’s a community. As a local mom, the opportunity to join an organization that is having such a powerful impact for kids, families, and neighbors in my own backyard is very meaningful.
Can you share a bit about your professional background and the path that led you to development and fundraising?
Growing up, my parents instilled a strong sense of giving back and connecting with your community. I’m grateful for that and it’s something I’ve carried throughout my career. As a young lawyer in New York City, I did a lot of pro bono work in my free time and had the opportunity to volunteer with several incredible organizations doing good for their neighbors. That experience showed me how philanthropy can be a powerful tool for strengthening communities when it’s done thoughtfully and inclusively. And it’s what sparked my interest in becoming a career philanthropist and moving into nonprofit leadership. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of serving organizations of varying scopes and sizes, but there is nothing quite like being able to have impact in your own community.
As Development Director, what does your role at the Y focus on day-to-day?
I help raise the money that makes the Y’s amazing programs possible. The Y is so much more than a gym—it’s a safe space for kids to learn and grow, a place where cancer survivors find strength and healing, and a community for veterans, seniors, and others who may be feeling isolated. My day is a mix of talking with donors and community partners, planning events, and making sure those who support the Y feel connected to the impact they’re having.
Why is philanthropic support so critical to the Y’s work in our community?

Membership fees and program fees don’t cover the full cost of what the Y provides. Philanthropic support fills that gap so we can serve everyone—not just those who can afford full fees—and ensures we can keep doing that for generations to come.
How do you see donors, partners, and community members playing a role in strengthening the Y’s impact?
Many of our donors are also members, parents, volunteers, or neighbors who simply want to give back to a place that’s meaningful to them. I see donors, partners, and community members as part of a shared effort to strengthen the Y’s impact. Philanthropy at the Y isn’t just about giving money—it’s about caring for our community and helping ensure everyone has access to programs and support. Through generosity and engagement, supporters help the Westport Weston Family YMCA adapt to changing community needs and create opportunity, health, and a sense of belonging for all.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing when you’re not at the Y?
When I’m not working, you can likely find me at a local ice rink cheering on my son while he plays hockey. I love spending time with family and friends and keeping active. I enjoy tennis in the summer, skiing in the winter, and taking advantage of the Y’s classes, events, and programs all year long.
If there’s one thing you’d like our community to know about the importance of giving back through the Y, what would it be?
Philanthropy through the Y is a powerful force for good—and there’s a way for everyone to take part. Whether you’re a working professional doubling your gift through your employer, a retiree giving through a qualified charitable distribution, or a local business investing in our community, every contribution helps the Westport Weston Family YMCA meet real, often unseen needs and strengthen our community.
Just in 2025, we distributed over $900,000 in scholarships, financial assistance, and community support—helping ensure access to programs and services for people who might otherwise be left out. That level of impact is only possible because of our philanthropic community.
How can members connect with you and support our work?
Philanthropy is personal, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. If you’d like to talk through options, ask questions, or simply learn more, I’m here as a resource and would welcome the conversation. Feel free to email, call or visit me at the Y any time!
