LIVESTRONG® AT THE YMCA
Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and LIVESTRONG® joined together to create LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors regain their health and strength in a supportive environment.
This is a free, 12-week small-group recovery program where participants work with specially trained Y staff to customize the program to their individual needs. Over the 12 weeks, participants also receive a Westport Weston Family YMCA membership. Common goals include rebuilding muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, reducing fatigue and improving confidence and self-esteem.
LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and making the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to return to their normal life or their “new normal”. The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize that LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is about health, not disease.
The next session of this free twelve-week, exercise, education, mental wellness and recovery program will begin on Sept 12, 2022. Participants must complete the below form which begins the registration process. After registration, we will contact you to confirm your medical clearance (must be approved by a physician). Once approved, you are required to complete an intake process, which includes a health questionnaire, PROMIS-29 profile, consent form, and an in-person physical assessment.
Our instructors are also specially trained in the elements of cancer, post-rehab exercise, and supportive cancer care. In addition, the program focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive “community” where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.
Next session starting 9/12/2022
