Water Safety Month at the Westport Weston Family YMCA

71% of the World is Water. Children Are 100% Curious.

At Westport Weston Family YMCA, we are committed to ensuring that water safety remains a top priority, especially as we eagerly anticipate the return to summertime activities. As temperatures rise, children seek relief in various water sources, increasing the risk of drowning. With May being National Water Safety Month, we urge parents and caregivers to reinforce the importance of water safety and equip their children with essential skills to stay safe in and around water.

HELP KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE

Drowning can occur nearly anywhere with standing water. As a parent or caregiver, you can’t keep your children sidelined. It’s essential to equip them with the tools they need to be confident in and around water, ensuring they don’t miss out on the numerous benefits of water-based activities, including exercise, opportunities to bond with family and friends, and the sense of accomplishment when they learn new skills.

As part of National Water Safety Month, we encourage parents to take an active role in promoting water safety by following these five tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for all:

ESSENTIAL WATER SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS

  • Always Seek Permission: Ensure that children understand the importance of asking for permission before entering or approaching any body of water. Establish clear boundaries and rules regarding water safety.
  • Appoint a Water Watcher: Designate a responsible adult as a Water Watcher, tasked with maintaining constant visual supervision of all children playing in or near the water. Avoid distractions such as phones, books, or other tasks while fulfilling this crucial role.
  • Avoid Reliance on Water Toys: While water toys may provide entertainment, they are not substitutes for proper safety measures. Coast Guard-approved life jackets are the only certified safety devices capable of protecting weak or non-swimmers.
  • Educate About Pool Drains: Teach children to steer clear of pool drains, as they pose a serious entrapment risk. Awareness of this hazard can help prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Discourage Breath-Holding Games: Warn children about the dangers of breath-holding games, which can lead to loss of consciousness and potentially fatal consequences. Encourage safe and responsible water play at all times.

By adhering to these essential water safety guidelines, parents and guardians can help ensure a secure and enjoyable aquatic experience for children. Together, let’s prioritize safety and promote responsible behavior around water environments.
