At the Westport Weston Family YMCA, we hold a commitment to our community to build more confident swimmers and instill water safety for all. From group to private lessons to swim team, we are proud to carry on the tradition of helping to develop confident swimmers of all ages.
CANCELLATION REMINDER
If the Y cancels a program meeting date or dates, every effort will be made to offer a make-up for the cancelled date(s). If a make-up date cannot be scheduled for any cancelled date, a credit will be issued. If a make-up date is offered for the cancelled date, no credits will be issued. No refunds will be issued for those who cannot attend the make-up date. A make-up is only available if the YMCA cancels a class.
SWIM LESSON STAGES
This YMCA swim lesson program is designed to teach safety, confidence and strength in the water in a supportive and nurturing environment. The program is organized into 3 main age categories and then the student will be assigned a stage based on their skill level. The Westport Weston Family YMCA also offers adult swim lessons, private lessons, masters clinics and competitive swimming programs.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS
PARENT/CHILD: STAGE A & B WATER EXPLORATION
For children age 6 – 36 months, brand new to swimming, with a caregiver in the water. The child/adult pairs are guided by the instructor through songs and movements to develop foundational swim skills. AGES: 6-36 mo
PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS
PRESCHOOL STAGE 1: WATER ACCLIMATION
Children with little to no experience, will not go under water voluntarily. AGES: 3-5
PRESCHOOL STAGE 2: WATER MOVEMENT
Child who is comfortable in the water. Cannot float on front or back on their own. AGES: 3-5
PRESCHOOL STAGE 3: WATER STAMINA
Child who is starting to swim 2-3 paddle strokes. This level will work on swimming 10 yards on their front and back. AGES: 3-5
PRESCHOOL STAGE 4: STROKE INTRODUCTION
Can swim 10-15 yards of front crawl and backstroke. AGES: 3-5
SCHOOL AGE SWIM LESSONS
SCHOOL-AGE STAGE 1/2: ACCLIMATION & MOVEMENT
Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self rescue skills performed with assistance. Focus on body positioning and control directional change and forward movement. AGES: 6-11
SCHOOL-AGE STAGE 3: WATER STAMINA
Students will learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance. Rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action. Will need to be able to paddle stroke on front 20 yards, and kick on back for 20 yards. AGES: 6-11
SCHOOL-AGE STAGE 4: STROKE INTRODUCTION
Students will develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is enforced through treading water and elementary backstroke. AGES: 6-11
SCHOOL-AGE STAGE 4.5: BRIDGE TO STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Students will develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is enforced through treading water and elementary backstroke. Lessons are in the big pool. AGES: 6-11
SCHOOL-AGE STAGE 5: STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Students will work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading and sidestroke. AGES: 6-11
SCHOOL-AGE STAGE 6
Students will refine stroke technique on all major strokes, learn about competitive swimming and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. AGES: 6-12

We offer 1 or 5-pack lesson options, with each participant paying a separate fee. Our lessons are tailored to meet the needs of each swimmer, ensuring both of you receive the guidance and support necessary to reach your swimming goals together.
