Get To Know Us – Meg George
“Growing up as a “Y brat” (being raised in a YMCA) is probably what really makes me really believe in the mission. Every day I come into work knowing that I am making a difference in a way I can be proud of.”
Meg George, our Director of Camp and Family Services, started volunteering at the YMCA at the early age of 11, when her step-dad was a director and dragged her into the office to stuff envelopes or help out in the nursery school on vacation days. Over the years, this early link to youth development fueled her passion to work with families and be involved with every aspect of the YMCA.
“I love my families! My personal relationships with people here are something I will always value. My husband has to sometimes remind me that when I tell stories about “my kids” it makes it sound like I have a few dozen children. Honestly, sometimes I feel like I do. I cherish the fact that my parents allow me to be a part of developing their kids. There is no better compliment than when a parent says, ‘You guys helped me raise my kids.’”
Meg also likes to show the value that children can receive from our programs. By reaching out and connecting to the Y community, she is able to touch individual’s lives directly. Her summer camp counselors, for example, are educated on what our Annual Campaign is and the access is offers so that all campers can enjoy our camp programs year after year, regardless of financial circumstances. When counselors give, they feel connected to the cause and know that they can make a difference, even by giving a little.
One of the things Meg really loves about the Westport Weston Family YMCA is that there is something for everyone to do and get involved with. If mom and dad want to work out, there is an outstanding nursery available to conduct programs or Child Watch available to keep kids engaged, helping them grow and stay healthy.
Meg shares the same mentality as Larry Hamilton, our Sports and Rec and YMCA Camp Mahackeno Specialist Director, “When we have better kids, we end up with better adults.”
This core mission oriented on youth development means inspiring and raising kids to meet their fullest potential. This can be through embracing a future leader’s dreams, offering after school care or simply through play in the facility. Families have access to professionally trained staff that want to nurture kids in their individual passions.
Every day, in thousands of places, each Y is serving a different us. In times of crisis, in times of need, and sometimes, just because.
Staff members like Meg are committed to working together to strengthen our community and help build a better us.
The Y. For a better us.
