Community Partner Spotlight: OrthoConnecticut

At the Westport Weston Family YMCA, we believe strong communities are built through strong partnerships. We’re excited to welcome OrthoConnecticut as a new Community Health & Wellness Partner and work together to bring expert health education and wellness resources to our members throughout the coming year.

We recently caught up with the OrthoConnecticut team to learn more about their practice, their commitment to keeping our community active and healthy, and what they’re looking forward to through this new partnership.

Why was partnering with the Westport Weston Family YMCA a good fit?

The partnership with the Westport Weston Family YMCA is a natural fit because both organizations share a commitment to helping people live healthier, more active lives. At OrthoConnecticut, the focus is not simply on treating injuries after they happen. Education, prevention, and helping people understand how to care for their bodies are also important parts of supporting long-term musculoskeletal health. The YMCA brings together people of all ages and abilities together for health, wellness, recreation, and community. Through this partnership, OrthoConnecticut has an opportunity to connect with members where they are, whether they are young athletes, active adults, parents, or older adults focused on maintaining strength and independence.

As a Community Health & Wellness Partner, OrthoConnecticut is excited to share the expertise of its orthopedic specialists and provide useful education that can help people make informed decisions about their musculoskeletal health.

Many people think orthopedic care only comes after an injury. What are some simple things people can do to protect their joints, stay mobile, and remain active as they age?

One of the most important things people can do is simply keep moving. Regular physical activity can help maintain strength, flexibility, balance, and joint mobility.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to staying active. Everyone has different abilities, health considerations, and personal goals, but a few simple habits can make a meaningful difference:

  • Stay active consistently. Walking, swimming, cycling, strength training, and other activities can help maintain mobility.
  • Build and maintain muscle strength. Strong muscles help support and protect the joints.
  • Focus on flexibility and balance. Maintaining range of motion and improving balance can help support mobility and reduce the risk of falls and injuries.
  • Warm up and progress gradually. Whether starting a new fitness routine or returning to an activity, avoid doing too much too quickly.

The goal is not necessarily to avoid every injury. It’s about building healthy habits that support strength, mobility, and independence at every life stage.

What orthopedic topics are people asking about most right now?

One of the biggest questions OrthoConnecticut providers hear is, “How can I stay active without making my pain or condition worse?”

People want to remain active, and that applies across all age groups. OrthoConnecticut providers continue to see interest in topics such as arthritis and joint pain, when joint replacement may be appropriate, back and neck pain, sports injuries, osteoporosis and bone health, and how to safely return to activity after an injury.
There is also growing interest in activity-related injuries associated with sports such as pickleball, tennis, golf, running, and youth athletics. As more people participate in these activities, questions about injury prevention, proper conditioning, and knowing when pain should be evaluated have become increasingly common.

What are you most looking forward to through this partnership with the YMCA?

OrthoConnecticut is most excited about the opportunity to build meaningful connections with YMCA members and provide education that is practical, accessible, and relevant to everyday life. OrthoConnecticut’s specialists have a tremendous amount of knowledge to share, and this partnership creates an opportunity to bring that expertise directly into the community. The partnership will create opportunities to discuss everything from helping young athletes prevent injuries to supporting adults who want to stay active and helping older adults maintain strength, mobility, and independence.

Most importantly, OrthoConnecticut hopes this partnership encourages people to think proactively about their musculoskeletal health. Whether someone is dealing with an injury, managing arthritis, starting a new fitness routine, or simply looking for ways to stay active as they age.

We’re grateful to welcome OrthoConnecticut as a Community Health & Wellness Partner and look forward to working together to help our community stay active, healthy, and informed.
