OLYMPIC HONOR & OUTSTANDING SERVICE CELEBRATED AT WWFY’S 101st ANNUAL MEETING
Westport, CT – On Monday, June 16, 2025, the Westport Weston Family YMCA proudly welcomed members, staff, volunteers, and board leaders to its 101st Annual Meeting of the Association, an evening dedicated to celebrating service, leadership, and the collective strength of the Y community.
Chief Executive Officer Glen Hale opened the meeting with heartfelt reflections on the Y’s milestones over the past year: marking the 10th anniversary of our Bedford Family Center Facility, reaching a record‑breaking 12,500 members, earning Presidium Accreditation for child safety, and commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Water Rats Swim Team. He praised the passion and generosity of everyone who makes the Y’s work possible and highlighted special programs like Race4Chase, which inspires young athletes in memory of Chase Kowalski. “This isn’t just a building, it’s a launching pad for dreams, wellness, and lasting friendships,” said Hale.
Following the CEO’s remarks, Juliane Sunderland, President of the Board of Directors, called the meeting to order, guided attendees through the approval of minutes, and the election of new Board of Directors Jim Kim, Nancy Lipin, Steve Viscardi, and Junior Board Member Blake Carlson. She also recognized the departing Board of Directors, John Greenspan and Kristin McKinney, as well as Junior Board Members Henry Grossberg and Dani Schwartz. In her Board of Directors address, Sunderland echoed and expanded on the CEO’s reflections, emphasizing the Y’s commitment to continued growth, community connection, and strategic vision for the year ahead.
Committee reports were delivered from Melanie Oberman (Growth Committee), John McKinney (Foundation & Investment), and Brian Carey (Treasurer’s Report), who highlighted the YMCA’s solid financial health and long-term stability.
As part of the evening’s celebration, two outstanding individuals were honored for their unwavering dedication and impact. Kristin McKinney received the Lee J. Edelstein Volunteer of the Year Award, recognizing her years of service and leadership. Rosemary Halstead was presented with the Allen Raymond Legacy & Impact Award, a testament to her more than 35 years of involvement with the WWFY. In true Rosemary fashion, she delivered a heartfelt speech, paying homage to Allen Raymond and reflecting on the Y’s history and legacy of community and service.
After presenting the Edward T. Bedford Outstanding Youth Awards to Water Rat Swim Team members Dani Schwartz and Grant Slippen, two-time U.S. Paralympian Matthew Torres made a surprise appearance to honor a beloved mentor. He awarded Ellen Johnston, Competitive Swimming Director and WWFY staff member of over 40 years, with the Order of Ikkos, a prestigious medal given by Olympic and Paralympic medalists to the coach or mentor who most influenced their success. In a powerful tribute from athlete to coach, Matthew reflected on Ellen’s impact and proudly declared he would be a “Water Rat for life.” Ellen received a standing ovation that captured the heart of what it means to lead, inspire, and believe.
Following this unforgettable moment of gratitude and legacy, the evening concluded with Brian Kuzmiak, Director of Human Resources, who took the stage to recognize the outstanding contributions of YMCA staff. The 2025 Staff Recognition Awards celebrated individuals who exemplify the Y’s values through their dedication, service, and heart. Patrick Freeman was honored as the Paul I. Becker Employee of the Year. Victoria Walters received the Above & Beyond Award, while Brian Ference was recognized with the Commitment to Mission Award. Alison Ligi was named this year’s Relationship Champion, and Rookie of the Year was awarded to Miles Grinnell.
MEET OUR 2025 HONOREES
Lee J. Edelstein Volunteer of the Year: Kristin McKinney
Kristin joined the Westport Weston Family YMCA Board of Directors in 2018, bringing her expertise as a nonprofit turnaround specialist to critical leadership roles. In 2019, she co-chaired the $28 million capital campaign, helping fund the expansion and renovation that brought our facility into the future. Elected to the Executive Committee in 2020, she then steered the CEO search and internal restructuring as a key member of the Search Committee and Transition Team. As Chair of Nominating & Governance, Kristin ensured strong leadership pipelines and thoughtful Board development. In 2024, Kristin served as the inaugural Chair of the Child abuse Prevention Committee where she led efforts to ensure the highest standards are maintained.
Now stepping off the Board, Kristin’s impact has been profound—her dedication, leadership, and thoughtful service model the standards set by Lee Edelstein. A creative spirit and lifelong learner, she balances her nonprofit service with writing, art, and music. A proud Westporter, she and her husband John—Chair of the Board of Trustees—have built a life rooted in community stewardship and Y values.
Allen Raymond Legacy & Impact Award: Rosemary Halstead
Rosemary Halstead has been deeply committed to the Westport Weston Family YMCA for over 35 years. She served as Board President from 2003 to 2007, guiding key growth efforts including our move to the Mahackeno campus, and later led the “Building What Matters” capital campaign as co-chair, driving the creation of our new facility. Under her leadership, ground was broken on the Bedford Family Center expansion, and she was a spirited presence at community celebrations marking that milestone.
After completing her term, she transitioned to a role on the Board of Trustees where she served as Trustee Secretary, ensuring our growth continues with strong stewardship and continuity. A passionate advocate for community and environmental enhancement, the YMCA dedicated the Mahackeno Rain Garden to Rosemary in 2012, celebrating her high standards of volunteerism, determination, and leadership. Rosemary’s visionary leadership, steadfast dedication to mission, and profound impact on our community mirror the legacy of Allen Raymond himself. It is with immense gratitude that we honor her as the 2025 Allen Raymond Legacy & Impact Award recipient.
Edward T. Bedford Outstanding Youth Awards: Dani Schwartz and Grant Slippen
Dani’s YMCA journey began in 2012 as a 7-year-old Water Rat in the legendary Brophy Pool. Since then, her dedication, resilience, and team spirit have never wavered. Whether overcoming health challenges, pushing herself to qualify for the 2025 YMCA National Championships, or cheering on her teammates, Dani leads by example. Beyond the pool, she excels academically taking the highest-level courses, participating in multiple honor societies and academic clubs and actively contributes to her community. As a junior member of the YMCA Board of Directors, Dani brought thoughtfulness and purpose to every discussion. She will attend the University of Richmond in the fall to study Data Science and Sustainability. Dani reflects the very best of youth development—hardworking, humble, and committed to making a difference.
Grant joined the Water Rats in 2016 and has quietly become a role model both in and out of the pool. Known as a “Silent Warrior,” he leads by example—demonstrating unmatched consistency, humility, and dedication that his teammates respect and emulate. Whether volunteering at food drives, helping at events, or simply asking where he can lend a hand, Grant embodies a spirit of service and reliability. His strong work ethic extends to academics, where he is a member of multiple honor societies, including Math, Science, Italian, and National Honor Societies. Grant’s thoughtful presence and ability to engage in meaningful conversation reflect both wisdom and character beyond his years. This fall, he will attend Trinity College to study Economics. Grant’s quiet leadership and commitment to growth make him a true reflection of Edward T. Bedford’s vision for youth who better their communities through action and integrity.
