Get To Know Us – Larry Hamilton
Sometimes passionate employees make all the difference in our community at the Westport Weston Family YMCA. Since Larry Hamilton, Sports and Rec Director and YMCA Camp Mahackeno Specialist Director, came onto the staff team 18 months ago, the kids in our community have seen a big impact!
Larry’s journey to the Y wasn’t through a previous membership or employment, he just wanted to focus on building better kids.
“When we have better kids, we end up with better adults.” He said.
Over the summer he focused on working with campers, keeping them excited and structured while learning fundaments through fun activities as much as possible.
“The Abenacki group (Kindergarten) at YMCA Mahackeno shared some of my favorite memories.” Larry said, reflecting. “We had sunscreen parties which was our way to get the kids excited about re-applying sunscreen on hot, sunny days.”
Working at our camp can be a tiring experience, but Larry says that every day the kids brought a smile to his face by starting fresh. Even if someone had a bad Monday, they would come in on Tuesday ready for a new day. This positive spirit helps re-enforce the YMCA’s mission to nurture the potential of all youth.
In his free time, Larry enjoys staying active, sports, and music. He also enjoys spending time with the people around him –luckily for Larry we love having him around too!
Every day, in thousands of places, each Y is serving a different us. In times of crisis, in times of need, and sometimes, just because.
Staff members like Larry are committed to working together to strengthen our community and help build a better us.
The Y. For a better us.
